BW - Panorama Printing - Tips and Tricks
Please
report errors or omissions to Bill Bergh - bill@cone-editions.com
One of the limitations imposed by the Epson driver is the length limit
of forty four inches. Many panorama photographers would like
to print longer images than this limit allows.
The Piezography BW plug-in allows a print of unlimited length.
There are a few constraints and common sense rules that need to
be followed to make successful Panoramic prints. We have printed
on an 1160 here up to 10 feet (120 inches) long.
PANORAMIC
PRINTING ISSUES:
1 - CREATING A CUSTOM PAPER SIZE TO ENABLE PRINTS LONGER
THAN 44 INCHES
2 - EPSON CUSTOM PAGE SETUP PROBLEM / WORKAROUND
3 - LIMITATIONS / PROCEDURE FOR CENTERING A PANORAMA
PRINT
4 - CAVEATS CONCERNING THE EPSON 3000 PRINTER
5 - EPSON 1200 - BANNER MODE
(possibly other future printers)
SOLUTIONS:
1 - CREATING A CUSTOM PAPER SIZE
TO ENABLE PRINTS LONGER THAN 44 INCHES
Read the section in the Epson Printer manual that came with the
printer about creating and using custom paper sizes. Create a custom
paper size that is as wide as the paper you are using and 44 inches
long. The Epson Page setup only allows you create a paper length
of 44 inches. When our software sees the magic number 44, the image
length is examined and if the image is longer, then the plug-in
keeps printing until one of 3 things happen:
a - the print finishes normally - or
b - the ink runs out - or -
c - the paper ends prematurely.

2 - EPSON CUSTOM PAGE SETUP
PROBLEM / WORKAROUND
All the Epson page setups are very similar for creating custom page
sizes. We have noted one problem here on some models. After you
have created a custom page size, the very first time you select
and use this new page size, the Epson page setup may revert back
to a default size, ruining the print. To ensure that this will
not happen:
a - First create the custom page size and then exit all the way
out of the Epson Page Setup screens until you are back in Piezography
or Photoshop.
b - Second, reenter the Epson Page setup screens, and select the
new custom page size you have just created.
c - Begin printing. This only happens the very first time after
you created the new custom size, so you do not need to do this in
the future.

3 - LIMITATIONS / PROCEDURE
FOR CENTERING A PANORAMA PRINT
a - Centering the image width is not a problem assuming that you
are using paper that is wider that the image. For Piezography BW
Ver.5.x and below, select the "Center" option in the Epson
Page Setup, and for Piezography BW Ver.6.x and above select "Center"
on the Plug-in box.
b - Centering the image along the length of the paper is a problem.
There no way for our plug-in to know the length of the actual paper,
as the Epson page setup will only allow a paper length of 44 inches.
There are a few common sense rules that one can use to ensure a
satisfactory print.
c - Add some extra white space to the top (portrait) or left (landscape)
of the image in Photoshop so that the initial printed edge is not
too close to the actual edge of the paper. You add this white space
to the image by increasing the "Canvas Size" in Photoshop.
d - Make sure that you cut your paper length a few inches longer
than the image length so that the trailing edge will not be too
close to the actual end of the paper. The Piezography BW Plug-in
assumes that if you are sending a 96 inch length image, then the
paper is at minimum, 96 inches plus the top and bottom printer margin
defaults. Having a bit of extra paper at the end is a good thing.
e - Trim the left and right margins to be equal once the print is
finished and out of the printer.

4 - CAVEATS CONCERNING THE
EPSON 3000 PRINTER
In our testing, most of the Epson 3000 printers can mechanically
print images longer than 44 inches without a problem.
However something happens right at the end of the 44 inch length
and the printer firmware somehow doesn't print the very last bit
of data before receiving the next rows of data for that part of
the image beyond 44 inches. This results in a band right at 44
inches and 88 inches etc... There is nothing we can do about this,
and it seems to be a function of what version of firmware is in
the printer. We tried everything we could to overcome this.

5 - EPSON 1200 - BANNER MODE
(possibly other future printers)
Please note that in order for the Epson Stylus Photo 1200
to print an image longer than 22", the Paper Source must be set
to Banner in the printer driver's Paper preferences menu. (This
is true for the Epson driver as well as the plug-in.) This
may be true in the future for new printers that we have not seen
yet.
