Q: Do you know of anyplace that I can get My Epson printer repaired where they will do a good job and not give me a hassle about the inks? ( for both "IN" Warranty or "OUT" of warranty work.)
A: Click for the "List of recommended repair places"

Q: The Web page for applying the WINDEX / FANTASTIK treatment is not very specific. Can you give me better step by step instructions?

NOTE: We have found that Fantastik is superior to Windex at cleaning out clogs. Definitely worth a try, even if you have tried Windex before. Updated 5-29-2001

A: Yes

Preparation:
1 - Get a flashlight.
2 - Get a bottle of Windex / Fantastik.
(For our friends outside the USA, Windex is a cleaner made with ammonia and water specifically for cleaning glass windows without leaving streaks. There should be some product available locally that is similar. Fantastik is an all purpose cleaner for the kitchen without ammonia. I am not sure of the ingredients, but care must be taken in choosing a substitute. Many kitchen cleaners leave a film behind, and using these kind of cleaners would NOT be a good idea.)
3 - Unscrew the Windex / Fantastik lid and pull off the long plastic straw from the spritzer/spray top.

At the Printer:
4 - Lift up the top hinged lid so that you can see the print head.
5 - Turn on the 3000/1160/1200 etc... It will go through a lot of monkeyshines getting ready to print.
6 - (3000 only) As soon as the printer is ready, the pause light goes off - reach in and pull gently to the left on the feed tubes attached to the print head. DO NOT pull too hard. You only have a few minutes to do this - and then the head gets locked.  If the head gets locked and you can not gently tug it to the left - turn off the printer and start over.
6 - (1160/1200 etc.) Press and hold the paper button on the front of the printer for 5 seconds. This will move the print head over to the left to the ink changing position

7 - Shine a flashlight in the place where the head is normally parked to the right. Find the sponges where the ink goes when the machine does through a cleaning cycle.  Normally you would see colors there where ink has been dumped but as the printer is new - there may not be much ink on them.
8 - Pick up the Windex / Fantastik tube.
9 - Put the tube in the Windex / Fantastik bottle and put your thumb or finger over the end. You want to trap 1/4 to 1/2 inch of Windex / Fantastik in the tube for the 3000, and about 1/4 to 3/8 inch for the smaller printers. This is the same technique you learned in first grade to transfer milk to your mouth using the straw until your mother caught you and put an end to that..
10 - Don't over do this next step - too much is not a good thing. Reach the tube down into the printer and put a few drops on the Black sponge and a little more than that on the longer Color sponge (the smaller printers only have one sponge).  IF you really messed up and put way too much Windex / Fantastik on the sponges - use a paper towel and soak it up. ( Now how did I know that one?)
11 - Push the printhead all the way to the left (3000) or press the ink button (1160 / 1200 etc.). so the head is returned to the home position.
12 - Turn the printer off, and let the printer sit for a few hours or over night. During a nozzle clean, the sponges are raised up against the print head. The sponge normally is raised against the printhead while it is sitting turned off so that it doesn't dry out. Letting the printer sit - gives the Windex / Fantastik time to work on the clog. It is not real fast - so you do need to let it have some time.
13 - Later - run another nozzle check and clean - most of the time this works or almost gets you 100% and you have to do it again.
14 - Why don't the cleaning cartridges do this?? - Cleaning cartridges are not a cleanser/solvent/ detergent. They are clear ink base with out dye - used for flushing out ink when changing sets.  Plus I didn't want to end this with just 13 steps.

Q: I have had problems printing where strange characters and funny streaks appeared. (Updated 9/1/2000)

A: If the printer was not in a "ready" or "error-free" state when you started printing, the printer may be (and remain in) character mode, rather than graphic mode. In that case a lot of strange characters will be printed. A common way that you can get into this mode is to start to print while the pause light of the printer is on, and then correct the problem (feeding paper, pressing the pause button for +3 seconds) while the plug-in is trying to establish a connection with the printer. This may leave the printer/plug-in out of sync, causing strange results. The "hard" reset resolves the "not-ready"/"error" states the printer may have been in. In many cases so does pressing the pause button for +3 seconds, but power off/on always seems to work.

The second problem we found was a strange quirk in the way that Photoshop sends the data from a single channel greyscale image with an alpha channel IF the image is printed in the landscape mode. This was not a bug in our software - but we have figured out a way to work around this. The latest PC and MAC updaters have the fix for this.

Q: I wish there was more ICQ profiles for the Lyson Fine Art and Lumijet papers. Are you going to add more?

A: Many of the above mentioned papers can use the same ICQ profile.  Read "Appendix 1" of the manual.  More will be added in the future, through a downloadable update/installer.

My best results are with the Concorde Rag and Somerset Enhanced. With Somerset I am getting pizza wheel tracks, one on each side of the paper. Is this a common problem with the 3000 too and do you have a cure?

I just had this problem on one of our printers here. For those of you that have never heard of a pizza wheel track, Epson installs little star wheels with sharp points that press on the paper as it rolls underneath. Some are fixed and some are spring mounted. Most of the time you would not know they were there. Sometimes they dig in and pull up fine tufts of paper making a fine dotted line right down the front of your image. Most noticeable on Glossy papers. Now if you designed this printer - would you put them on the side where the image is printed? Ah - but genius is easy in hindsight.

To locate the offending Pizza (Star) wheel, I found an area of the image that I could remember where the Star wheel track was located.  I put the print back in printer and used the LF/FF button to forward the print out to where I could see the area of the image I had keyed my eyes to look for. I found the mark on the paper and figured out which group of Star wheels had to be the culprit.

Removing the little Star wheels is very easy.  They are contained in a little block of plastic, and the block slips out after releasing the clip. Look for a little tab that stick up in the center of the plastic block, and push down on it with a small flat blade screw driver, or similar tool. That will release a little catch and in my case the block then slid forward and out of the metal holder. NOTE: Keep the little wheels so that if you have to send the printer back for repair at a later date, you can put them back in.  One user called us to ask where the fixed ones went and where the spring loaded ones went. This is the best advise I can give you - keep track of it when you pull them out. Draw a map. Keep notes.

If you have serious trouble with many, many tracks, Some users have removed all of them, and reported no problems printing. I think their primary use is to keep the paper straight while printing. Other users have sent the printer back to Epson for a fix. If you call Epson, their tech support will run the gamut from those that claim they never heard of this before, to those that will tell you to send it in for repair. If you get the former, call back 'til you get the latter.

Updated 6/09/2000 I was printing on Orwell (310 g/m2) and was getting pizza wheel tracks from every one of them on one of our 6 - 3000's. Don't forget that we are exceeding the Epson specifications with these thick art papers. The Epson manual lists the maximum thickness for "card stock" at 180 g/m2.   I removed all the Pizza Wheels and the problem was resolved. Later I printed a very dark image on another paper - and the paper was heavily saturated with ink and buckled (a wavy surface instead of a flat sheet) as it came out from under the print head. The print head hit one of the buckles and smeared the ink - ruining the print.

So - to fix this I currently reinstalled the Pizza wheels, but I removed the ones that are a fixed height. (Pull them out with a needle nose pliers). The fixed height wheels have a little metal axle poked into the white plastic block. I left the center wheels installed that are mounted on a spring. This seems to be working well so far.

Q: I am becoming convinced that the quality of the scan is extremely important. I am noticing flaws in the prints now, that I can see back in the image in Photoshop, now that I know where to look.  I wouldn't have noticed this before. What is your experience?

A: Our experience here, is that when you have Larry running a Linotype-Hell Drum scanner - you don't have this problem. <Grin>

This inkset is capable of rendering great detail in the 0-to-15% and 85-100% areas that may have been unreachable before. Be VERY careful to keep a full histogram at the edges and do NOT clip the highlights and shadows.  Jon has put a lot of detail in the manual about examining the histogram of a scan, and what to reject and what can be overcome.

Q: I'm having a hard time determining the printing side of the paper. The Lumijet instructions say that the "back of media 'feels like paper." Hmmm...it all feels "like paper" to me and the two sides seem very similar. How do you tell the difference?

A: Use the "under" side of your moderately DRY tongue and touch the paper. The coated side is more sticky to your tongue. Don't laugh - this is a professional trick. We get lots of paper around here jumbled up in little folders and quite often go through this ourselves.  Uncoated papers will feel the same on both sides. Some coated papers are more white on the coated side and a different white or cream colored on the back side.

Q: I am having a problem with one image where I get a ragged pixelated edge on my print. It does not appear to be in the image. Have you seen this?   5/01/2001

A: We have found and fixed the problem that caused the raggedy edge. It was a very obscure problem indeed, which is why it is not heard of very often.
- FIX - download the 5.1.3d beta updater listed at the top of the page. - 5/01/2001
Back to questions

Q: After I installed the recent update - when I go to export the image in Photoshop, I get the error message "Inconsistent plug-in version".

A: This message is caused when an older version of the plug-in is launched, after a newer version has been installed. This message is just a "Caution" to let you know that you are not using the latest version.
1 - Typically this can happen to someone that has multiple versions of Photoshop installed on their computer.
2 - This can also happen when the new update was installed to the wrong place on the computer.

- FIX 1 - If you have multiple installations of Photoshop on the same computer, you can avoid this problem by installing the Piezography BW Plug-in more than once, separately for each installation of Photoshop.
- FIX 2 - The error message can also be caused by installing the updated version in the wrong place. This typically will happen if the plug-in is installed to the Photoshop "ONLY" folder where there is also a Plugins-Import/Export Folder. The easiest way to fix this is to do a "FIND" for "PiezographyBW.8be" on your computers hard drive, and the one that has the latest date is the newest one. Move the newest one to the Photoshop->Plug Ins-> Import/Export folder, and replace the older one. The fastest way to launch the "Find" function is :
MAC - Press [command][F].
WINDOWS - Press [windows key][F]

Q: At the end of the print job, every time I print, I get an "out of paper" message. This isn't serious but kind of a pain in the neck. I can hit the pause button on the printer and click OK on the computer and everything is OK. Is this a bug?

A: The "Paper Out" alert is issued on Macintosh systems with serial I/O when the plug-in tries to communicate with the printer, but the printer reports an error state: paper out. It occurs most frequently when manually feeding media to the printer. There are a number of reasons why this happens. If the image is longer than the printable paper length (paper length - (top margin + bottom margin)). For the Epson Stylus Color 3000, using PiezographyBW's "broad-band" microweaving, the top and bottom margins are approximately 7/16" (top) and 9/16" (bottom). Manual paper feed is not very precise, so if you try to print an 8x10" image on an 8.5x11" piece of paper, you just might run out of paper before printing the entire image (raising a paper eject/paper load signal at the printer). You may think that you are done (you may not notice that the last few lines are missing), but you are not. If you quickly load another sheet into the printer, you may be surprised when it prints a few lines and spits the new sheet out. (You also won't get a "Paper Out" alert.) If the plug-in were not to issue the alert, and return to Photoshop before the problem were resolved, both the printer and the Macintosh serial port may be left in an error state, which may not be cleared with the next Export or Print command. In this case, the printer will have to be reset (power off/on); also, the printer may have to be selected at the Chooser, or the Macintosh may have to be restarted.

V5.0.3a implements the Macintosh USB interface, and when using this interface to a printer, the "Paper Out" alert is not sent. This is because the communication between the printer and the plug-in differs under serial and USB I/O. Under USB I/O, the plug-in doesn't have to wait for an "error-free" state from the printer in order to complete and normally terminate the communication link.

Q:
(NOTE - Effects All OS less than 8.6 for the original Ver. 4.0.4 release.) I can't get the Piezography plug-in to work. In Photoshop, File->Export, "Piezography BW" could be selected (not grayed out), but would not present a dialogue box. Piezography plug in also failed to open print dialogue even when I used Extension Manager to load only "8.1 all". Now what?

A: It turned out that the installer was not working correctly for OS 8.5 and below. Download the version 5.0.3a Updater that adds USB support for Mac G3's and G4's, and has an updated installer that eliminates the problems with the older OS's. It has been tested by one of our users clear back to with system 7.5.3.  See related question at top of page for download info.
Back to questions

Q: Our Epson 3000 (or other) printers are networked to our Macs via ethernet. Will we be able to print to them via ethernet with the Piezography driver??

A: Not at this time. We don't see this as a major problem for this reason.  Printing to any of these Printers is slow.  Epson equips these printers with very little internal memory.  Any machine that is printing is tied up baby-sitting the printer sending little bursts of data to the printer. In our networked studio - we don't want to tie up our more expensive imaging stations printing to the printer across the network.  We have dedicated our old 8500 and 9500 Macs to printing, and we transfer the files across the LAN (fast) and then let those machines do the printing (slow).  A good way to make the older machines useful again. Since they just print, they can effectively put to use the oldest, smallest monitors.

Q: On a Mac G4 with OS8.6 using a beta version of the USB driver ver.5.0.1, when I try to export an image to the printer - I get the following error message, "Unknown Error has occurred. Errornumber:-192".   What does this mean?

A: >Error -192 is a Mac OS error saying that some process started and couldn't find all the resources it needed.   This error is from the OS and not the Plug-in.   In this case - troubleshooting the problem with the customer on the phone - we found that the USB 3000 was not selected in the Chooser.   The missing resource in this case would be communication with the printer.   Choosing the proper printer in the Chooser fixed the problem.
Back to questions

Q: On a Beige Mac G3 with a USB adapter card installed, when I try to export an image to the printer - the first time the Epson dialog box appeared and when I hit "OK" - nothing happened?

A - BUG ALERT FOR 5.0.2 -
For serial Mac's that have added USB support through a third party USB card - the plug-in gets lost in the USB maze trying to find a USB printer that may not be nonexistent. An ALERT message that should pop up is not functioning. When you select Export in Photoshop the Piezography dialog box fails to appear. The bug has been found fixed by Version 5.0.3.

Ver 5.0.3a corrected some timing issues that where mostly found with the very latest G4's (Updated 8/08/2000)

Back to questions

Q: On a Mac G4 with OS 8.6, when I try to export an image to the printer - the first time the Epson dialog box appeared and when I hit "OK" - nothing happened? Updated 8/08/2000

A - With Ver. 5.0.2 - if there was a problem finding the USB printer, an ALERT message that is supposed to pop-up is not functioning and the plug-in appears to be not working. This is fixed in Ver.5.0.3. Make sure that the USB printer is selected in the Chooser. Also there appears to be conflicts with the EPSON USB driver and other Third party USB drivers installed.

One G4 customer with OS 8.6 found that he was able to print after disabling all USB drivers except the Epson USB driver and Apples USBAppleMonitorModule and USBPrintDriver. After further isolation he found that USB Device Extension was the culprit.

Ver 5.0.3a addressed some timing issues that first showed up with the latest fastest G4's. It helped solve this problem as well.

Back to questions

Q: On a Mac G4 with OS 9.0, when I try to export an image to the printer - I get a message that the plug-in fails to find the printer. - 8/08/2000

A - We received our new G4-500 today, 5/5/2000, installed Ver. 5.0.2 to cause a problem - (unable to find supported printer), installed the updater ver.5.0.3 and have had no problems printing after. Our new G4 came with OS 9.0.4. If you have OS 9 and have not updated to 9.0.4 - go to Apple and do it now! There were lots of USB bugs fixed. Also there was a slip at Apple and users were able to download a beta version of 9.0.4 that was not supposed to be available to the public. So if you installed the 9.0.4 update some time ago - do it again.

One customer with OS 9.0.4 has lots of USB devices attached to his machine and found that he had third party USB extension conflicts. He can load a minimal set of USB drivers and print successfully.

Ver 5.0.3a was released to fixed this problem. There were timing issues that started showing up with the latest fastest G4's.

Q: I would like to use an older MAC 8100 to print from so I can keep my G4 free for imaging. But when I try to export an image to the printer - I get a message "Code fragment error". I am using Ver 5.0.3  - 5/30/2000

A - We have users that are running successfully back to OS 7.5.x, however there are a couple of customers that are trying to print from older hardware. (The only know problem so far is with an 8100 with OS 8.6, and a 7100 on OS7.5.1). There is some problem in the code for the USB drivers in Ver.5.0.3 that this older hardware doesn't like. For these users we recommend staying with the original serial only version 4.0.4.  We have updated MAC Ver 4.0.4 to include the newer ICQ profiles.

Download the Self-extracting executable file and then Double click to decompress the files.   The Plug-in will be updated, and additional ICQ profiles will be added to the list of supported papers for those updating from Ver4.0.4.
NOTE:
This updater is also a downdater. You must first have a full version of 4.0.4, 5.0.2, or 5.0.3 installed from the disk for this updater to work.

Download the update / downdate here :  PiezoMAC404update

Q: Piezography only shows "unsupported" for Ink and Media selections. I am using Ver 5.0.3, and use US international system MacOS 9.04 with Czech bundle and Photoshop 5.5 or 5.0.2, and all names of folders in System folder are original ones.  6/09/2000
NOTE: May effect all non-romanic alphabet keyboard users

A:  This customer from the Czech Republic struggled with this problem until he tried changing the name of his system hard disk to a name that used the roman character set.  Apparently the PiezographyBW plug-in could not find the profiles folder when the root name of the hard disk is in the extended international character set.

Producing an international version will be a project in the future. Some of the difficulties involved are:

PiezographyBW, for both the Macintosh and Windows environments, are not internationalized, and assume a (U.S.) English naming convention of drives and directories. The code (for both operating systems) was designed to expedite its internationalization   The problem is that each country/language requires a text translation (what are the Czech names for "Windows System", and "Color" directories?) and a rebuild of the software. This requires a knowledge of each language (and there are local variants of many languages, such as Spanish). Also, in order to test the software, you have to have machines that run the country/language version of the O.S. On top of all that, you have Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic, and the double-byte character sets.

Q: I am on NT4 with all service packs installed. I set the print resolution in the Epson Print dialog to 1440, but after I hit OK and go back to the Piezography dialog box, the print resolution shows 720. The print looks fine - but am I getting the best resolution that I can?  (Similar but slightly different problem on Windows 98 and ME - See below)

A: Epson 3000 only version - The plug-in extracts the resolution data from the OS data structure that contains information about the device initialization and environment of a printer. Under NT 4.0, when the (Epson Stylus) printer resolution is set to 1440x720, all of the fields pertaining to output resolution in the data structure are set to 720dpi; under Windows 95 and 98, a field is set to 1440. Under all Windows OS's, however, the plug-in's best output mode is used when the resolution is 720 dpi or greater. In essence you have a draft resolution (360) or 'best" resolution (1440). There is no middle resolution (720).

Epson 1160/860/760 for Windows ME and 98 - The Epson driver that ships on the Epson disk you received with the printer has serious bugs. Epson has fixed those with an update on their site. See the problems below for instructions on updating the driver and naming conventions.

Q: Is there anyway to abort the export once it has started short of [ctrl][alt][del]?

A: Yes - hold down the escape key - the export will stop. This is in the Manual.

Q: I just installed the 1160 software on my Win 98 PC and when I try to export - a box pops up that says the printer is not supported? When I hit "OK" the box goes away and nothing happens. (8/08/2000).

A: The problem is the Epson Driver. Go to www.epson.com and down load the latest 1160 driver.  The version that we are downloaded here is "Print Driver c50CE" and the name of the file it downloads is SC11650C.exe.  I just checked today (8/8/2000) and it is still the latest.

Before installing the 1160 driver update - it is best to click on "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Printers". Find the 1160 printer, right click on it and delete it. Then install the SC11650C.exe update.

The problem is that if you install the update without deleting the printer from the printers control panel, then the install creates a second printer called EPSON Stylus COLOR 116(copy2) instead of EPSON Stylus COLOR 1160. Our plugin searches for the name EPSON Stylus COLOR 1160 and EPSON Stylus COLOR 116(copy2) doesn't cut it.

If you accidentally have already installed the updated driver and this is your situation now - don't worry - you can just delete the printer called EPSON Stylus COLOR 1160 and then rename EPSON Stylus COLOR 116(copy2) to EPSON Stylus COLOR 1160.

Q: I just installed the 1160 (Piezography version 5.1.0b) software on my PC and when I try to export - the Piezography box does not show any of the media types, only the unsupported option.

A: An error was made in the installer software for a few copies of the disk. When the installation is complete, the installer puts a second copy of the plug-in (PiezographyBW.8be) in the system folder. What should be installed there is the preferences file (PiezographyBW.rim).

I have zipped up the "PiezographyBW.rim" file and made it available for download.  Extract the file to your desktop and move or copy it to your C:\Windows\System directory. You can safely delete the extra copy of the plug-in that was erroneously placed there. (PiezographyBW.8be)

.Download the "PiezographyBW.rim" file here :  PC510b_fix.exe

Q: When printing to my 3000 to a Win2k/Win2k network the Piezo driver came up with an 'unsupported printer' message. Note: This will effect all other printer models as well. 06/29/2001

A: The problem appears to be due to the length of the fully qualified printer name in Windows. The plug-in relies on a standard Windows printer structure that has a member that stores the printer name. This element has room to store a maximum of 31 characters, unlike other strings that may allow for a full path name length of up to 255 characters.

If, for example, your fully qualified network printer name, as it appears in the Print Setup dialog, is: "\\notebook\Epson Stylus COLOR 3000" it would stored in the windows internal structure member as "\\notebook\Epson Stylus COLOR 3". The plug-in looks for the printer type, i.e., "Epson Stylus COLOR" and model, i.e., "3000". Since it cannot find 3000, it issues a message that it cannot identify the selected printer.

If you choose to ignore this message and click OK to export the image, the plug-in attempt to communicate with a printer named "\\notebook\Epson Stylus COLOR 3" which does not exist, and responds with the an 'unsupported printer' message.

Solution: Keep the length of the fully qualified printer name to 31 characters or less. In this case, if your Win2k machine named "notebook" was renamed to "nbook", the printer name "\\nbook\Epson Stylus COLOR 3000" would work. Make sure to include the back slashes "\" in the count.

This is not exactly a bug in PiezographyBW, but we will explore ways to get around this and try to find a solution that will allow longer name strings. Any fixes for this will be rolled into a later release of the Piezography BW plug-in.

Q: I'm having a problem with Piezography 6.0 on a PC, an Epson 1160 printer,USB connection, WindowsXP that started when I changed from Windows ME (or 98) to XP. When trying to print on SuperA3 (13x19) the printer only prints the top, left, letter size portion of the image and appears to have clipped my image. 24 Jan 2002

Solution
: The problem is caused by the page setup features of the generic driver that ships on the Windows XP disk. To fix this problem, download and install the Epson XP driver for the Epson 1160 at www.epson.com

NOTE : This problem is caused by the generic Windows XP drivers that ship with XP. Apparently there are bugs in the paper sizes. The Epson 1160 Driver that has been updated for XP fixes this, but not all models have updated drivers yet - for example the Epson 3000. This could be a problem for some users with older printers until Epson finishes releasing drivers for the older printers.
