For the more adventurous among us that will not rest until we know the inside scoop - owning the repair manual for the printer can prove enlightening. Reading the repair manuals can be a bit dry, but usually there are little details here and there that pay big dividends later. Just knowing what the error codes for the Epson 7000 once helped me decipher that a customers wall power was probably at fault, and a quick change to an extension cord and an outlet in another room proved this to be correct and avoided a long call with Epson.
